Theodore Anderson received the keys to his new home Thursday afternoon, July 11, thanks to Leon County, who held their second ribbon-cutting and keys presentation ceremony for a replacement home in as many days.
Funding for the new home comes from the Leon County Housing Services’ Home Replacement Program. The County, through its division of Housing Services, has administered the program for more than 20 years with the goal of increasing and preserving the supply of affordable housing units within the unincorporated areas of Leon County.
The ribbon cutting and presentation of keys for the new home, that is located on the same site where his family’s greatly dilapidated home once stood, mark the start of a new life for Mr. Anderson. With more than 50 percent of his older home damaged, his single-family residence qualified for a grant that allowed for the demolishing and replacement of the substandard mobile home with a new 3-bedroom / 2-bathroom mobile home.
“It is great for the County to partner with local contractors to assist our residents in getting their lives back on track,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox. “And, at the same time, we keep our community working.”
Theodore, a single father of two children, a 12 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, applied for a home in 2011. He has lived at his current address for approximately 20 years, and previously worked for the Leon County School Board before becoming disabled last year.
The primary focus of Leon County’s Housing Services Division is to ensure that very-low, low, and moderate income level residents of Leon County are provided with safe and sanitary housing. The division accomplishes this goal through its many programs which include down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers, foreclosure prevention assistance, home rehabilitation and home replacement.
